Planning for Retirement in Illinois

Planning for Retirement in Illinois

Illinois tax and estate rules differ from federal rules and from most other states. We help Algonquin-area clients plan around them.

Illinois’ Retirement Income Exemption
Illinois doesn’t tax Social Security, pensions or most retirement plan withdrawals, but it does tax interest, dividends and capital gains. That shapes which accounts you draw from and where you hold investments.

The Illinois Estate Tax
Illinois taxes estates above $4 million, far below the federal exemption, and spouses can’t combine their exemptions automatically. Married couples near that level often need trust planning to protect both.

Illinois Public Pensions
Survivor options, Tier 1 and Tier 2 rules and lump-sum choices for TRS, IMRF, SURS and State Employees’ Retirement System members.

Avoiding Illinois Probate
Beneficiary designations, trusts and transfer on death instruments for real estate can help your family avoid a lengthy probate, coordinated with your estate planning attorney.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas does your Algonquin office serve?

We meet with clients throughout McHenry, Kane and Western Cook counties, including Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Huntley, Carpentersville, Elgin, Schaumburg and Barrington, and by video anywhere. We currently have clients in 38 states.

How much does a financial advisor cost?

We are a fee-only financial advisory firm meaning we charge a fee based on the value of the assets we manage for you.  Our most common percentage is 1% of the assets we manage for a client.  The fees are debited from your accounts at the rate of 1/4 of your fee percentage each quarter (January, April, July & October).

Do you work with clients who split time between Illinois and Florida?

Yes. With offices in Algonquin, IL and Bradenton, FL, we have options to meet in-person or virtually so we have the ability to meet with you no matter where your travels take you.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes. Hendricks Wealth & Estate Management is a Registered Investment Adviser, which means we have a fiduciary duty to act in your best interest when we provide investment advice and financial planning. We’re paid through a percentage of the assets we manage for our clients, not commissions on the investments we recommend, and we disclose any conflicts of interest in our Form ADV and Client Relationship Summary.
